Here's a follow-up to the story we discussed in class Thursday about the newspaper that published the names and address of citizens with valid handgun permits :

Time Warner bans gun ads

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/491427-Time_Warner_Cable_Bans_Gun_Ads.php

After the Sandy Hook shooting, Time Warner Cable has announced that they will be banning any ads on their network that features semi-automatic guns and/or guns being pointed at people.

I think this is an interesting move for such a large company. We seem to forget how much violence is shown everywhere these days- movie trailers, video game commercials, etc. Does this mean no more movie trailers from this network? If that's the case, I can't imagine anything good coming from the change besides trying to get a point across. Companies like Time Warner Cable thrive off of showing ads for all types of products, movies, and shows-- which a good number of them contain some sort of gun violence or gun use. I'm very curious to see if this sticks and what other people think of the stand that Time Warner is taking.

Worry Over Sales Spurs Talk of Cheaper iPhones

Apple is having to decide wether to keep the iPhones at higher prices with lower sales or lowering the prices to compete with smaller phone labels.

Laurence I. Balter, an analyst at Oracle Investment Research, said one reason Apple’s stock had been hurting was that analysts often overshoot with their predictions for how many devices Apple will sell each quarter. He said that might explain some of Monday’s sharp drop: “Everybody got a little too aggressive and optimistic.”
Mr. Balter said he thought Apple’s strategy for growth would be to go after more price-conscious consumers, because once they become customers, they are likely to keep buying other Apple products. Perhaps the key to that strategy will be a cheaper iPhone, he said.

From my favorite humor columnist, Dave Barry of the Miami Herald;  "Technology is constantly changing our lives.  Look at the cell phone.  Just twenty years ago, virtually nobody was able to get into a car crash caused by trying to steer and dial at the same time; today, people do this all the time."
This week’s “breakthrough” announcement with Sprint may be the first sign of a thaw in relations between the radio and wireless industries. Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan, who spearheaded radio’s efforts over the past five years, says the industry is in “advanced discussions” with other carriers but it’s difficult to gauge when they may announce they’re following Sprint’s lead.

Would you listen to over-the-air radio on your cell phone if you could?
National Association of Broadcasters president Gordon Smith will be among the entertainment industry leaders who’ll meet with Vice President Biden today to discuss the role of mass media in gun violence. Executives from the motion picture, cable, and movie theater industries will also attend the meeting, along with former FCC chair Michael Powell. Biden is heading a commission that’s working to come up with recommendations on gun policy. The NAB last month said it backed a congressional proposal to enlist social scientists to look at the link between media and violent behavior.

What do you think the role of mass media is in gun violence?
