Music for the Open-Minded

The New York Times just did an article about Timbre, a free music app. I didn't think music apps were a big deal since everyone has easy access to them, so I read more about it. Timbre is actually designed so that it can't be personalized--the whole idea is for people to find out what concerts are going around in their area, not just the music they like. Based on your location, Timbre tells you what concerts are playing and gives you a 30 second preview of a song (so long as it's on iTunes). It's similar to something like Songkick, but the idea is to get more people to listen to different types of music and expand their horizons, instead of only discovering concerts for the music that they're interested in.

  1. Very helpful to both concert goers and bands since concerts are an important revenue stream to bands in these days of decreased music sales.
