Problem with Newspapers is NOT the News, It's the Paper.

Why Jeff Bezos Will Revitalize
Newspapers

A message from Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads

$250 million. That's all Amazon CEO Jeffrey Bezos paid for the Washington Post, which was once worth several billion dollars.
$70 million. That's all John Henry paid on Friday for the Boston Globe, a paper the New York Times acquired for $1.1 billion in 1993.
Next to nothing. That's what IBT Media paid to buy Newsweek over the weekend from IAC, which itself had paid only $1 plus $40 million in pension obligations to buy it two years ago.
Some billionaires like cars, yachts and private jets. Others like newspapers.

Figuring the math, it's hard to justify even a $250 million valuation for the Post. The company reported that it lost nearly $50 million for the first half of the year on newspaper operations that generated $138.4 million in revenue. Of that $50 million loss, nearly $40 million was in non-cash pension expense. So you could argue that the company lost only $10 million on operations. But it lost $33 million in the first half of 2012, too, also including pension costs. Circulation fell about 7 percent in the first half of 2013. At the end of last year, the company valued its newspaper assets at $293.6 million. That turned out to be too optimistic.
Listening to the Bezos buzz has been fun following his announcement that he intends to buy -- and save -- the Post. Of course, pundits have explored every angle, from his political agenda and desire to keep the Post producing quality content to his wanting to take a step toward creating a media empire. What I find most entertaining, however, are the "Internet generation" people laughing at how an Internet pioneer is buying old school "dead-tree" media like newspapers. As if it's a stupid move. Jeff Bezos is not stupid.

Rob Curley, who formerly headed the online division at the Washington Post, once told me a story about the reason the paper was failing. He suggested that the Post's downfall was that it was being operated by newspaper people who were not willing to let go of their preconceived notions about the way things had to be done. It's a curse we all have when we've grown up in an industry.
The Post had hired Curley, the most brilliant online newspaper specialist in the world (now at the Orange County Register). Yet Curley was handcuffed because the newspaper had to run stories first, before they could be put online. Rob would have stories within moments of their happening but was told not to post them until after the newspaper had been delivered the following morning. If it seems silly, well, it was. But there are stories like that at just about every newspaper in the world, and in some places it's probably still going on. When we have always done things a certain way, it's nearly impossible to let go of the way we feel "things should be done" and be willing to cannibalize our own products.
So why will Bezos win? Simply put, he does not think like a newspaperman, he thinks like an Internet mogul. Rather than a newspaper doing Internet, the Post will become an online company that happens to do news very well. The Post has a giant brand, and Bezos understands how to turn that giant brand into a giant Internet business. Will he even continue to print the paper? Probably, but my guess is that he will rethink the print portion, how it is used, and how it can be linked to and rooted in everything online. Perhaps Jeff will give each subscriber a Kindle Fire, which he can provide for less than fulfilling print to all subscribers' homes for a year. He then cuts his print distribution costs, sells the presses for scrap metal, and benefits by having more Kindles in market.
The most broken part of the newspaper model isn't the news, it's the paper -- the cost of paper, the cost of press, and the antiquated distribution model. But the most valuable asset the Post possesses is not its subscriber base or the remaining 50 percent of its former readership, its strength is the trust it has earned worldwide. The Post will become a giant news source for America, much like the New York Times.
Jeff Bezos and others like him understand that brands are valuable consumer assets and that those brands can be maximized with smart technology. Imagine the power of owning the top news brand in every town in America. Imagine being able to buy every paper in America that matters from owners who, in many cases, will be glad to take fire-sale prices. Though Bezos may not need smaller local brands, it would make sense to own the major markets where local trust lies.
If it's not Bezos, some other Internet mogul would be smart to consider the strategy. Maybe Craig Newmark of Craigslist, who singlehandedly brought down newspapers' biggest income stream.
Those of us in the radio industry are still struggling with how radio will remove itself from its debt mess and recover in the future. Perhaps we should look at what is happening to the Post and consider what our future may look like. Everyone seems to be wondering how Bob Pittman will save Clear Channel from its giant debt, yet Pittman, like Bezos, is not a radio man running a radio group. Though he started in radio, he is an Internet mogul running a radio group and thus he sees opportunity differently than most of us do.
Though I don't think Pittman's plan is to make Clear Channel an Internet-only company, he certainly has laid the foundation with iHeart if it's ever needed. Clear Channel is on the path to becoming a media giant, and it will look very different five years from now.
Will Bezos or others like him set foot in radio? I think it's a strong possibility. When every online radio company -- Pandora, Slacker, and others -- craves our audience loyalty and our ad revenues, someone with vision will see how they can transform radio, just by not thinking like radio people.

And if newspapers, radio stations, cable operators, and others from "traditional media" would stop thinking like traditional media, we might be able to turn that to our advantage on our own. Though we all possess tremendous experience and resources, it is that same experience that often prevents us from thinking like Jeff Bezos.

Think You'll Need Some Extra Help in Heaven?

Devout followers pay heed: The Catholic Church is offering indulgences for those who take the righteous step of following Pope Francis on Twitter.
The granting of indulgences, a centuries-old practice, is believed to reduce the time that one must spend in purgatory. Traditional means of obtaining indulgences include, among other things, making confession or visiting one of the patriarchal basilicas in Rome.
To be fair, the Vatican has not out and said, "following Francis on Twitter is good for indulgences." However, a June decree stated that "anyone attending the Rio World Youth Day [in Brazil] would obtain a plenary indulgence." That nugget is followed by a passage that says, "the faithful who are legitimately impeded [from going to Brazil] can obtain the plenary indulgence if ... they follow these same rites and pious exercises ... by the new means of social communication."
This, according to a source cited in The Guardian, includes following the Pope on Twitter and tracking the events live.
For anyone looking for a free pass to the pearly gates, there are some churchy asterisks to this deal: Confessing is a prerequisite, as is being "truly penitent and contrite."

Northeast Asia on edge ahead of possible North Korean missile test

CNN) -- Countries in northeast Asia remained on edge Wednesday amid warnings from U.S. and South Korean officials that North Korea could carry out a missile test at any point. Japan has deployed missile defense systems around Tokyo, some Chinese tour groups have canceled visits to North Korea, and U.S. radars and satellites are trained on an area of the Korean east coast where Kim Jong Un's regime is believed to have prepared mobile ballistic missiles for a possible test launch. After weeks of belligerent threats and provocative gestures from Pyongyang, the situation on the Korean Peninsula is fragile. Adm. Samuel J. Locklear, the top U.S. commander in the Pacific, said Tuesday that he couldn't recall a time of greater tension in the region since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s.What will happen if missile launches? Before the two controversial long-range rocket launches that North Korea carried out last year, the reclusive regime gave ample warning to the world. But it is keeping everyone guessing about what it might do this time around. Intelligence suggests that North Korea may be planning "multiple mission launches" in the coming days beyond two Musudan mobile missiles it has placed along its east coast, a senior Pentagon official told CNN on Wednesday. The official did not have specifics on the numbers of other missiles and launchers spotted on U.S. imagery. The official said the North Koreans are military "masters of deception" and may have planned all along to focus the world's attention on the Musudans while they plan multiple launches of other missiles, which is a tactic they have used in the past. South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said at a parliamentary hearing Wednesday that "according to intelligence obtained by our side and the U.S., the possibility of a missile launch by North Korea is very high," according to the semiofficial South Korean news agency Yonhap. The Musudan is an untested weapon that he said has a range as far as 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles). That would mean it could reach as far as Guam, a Western Pacific territory that is home to U.S. naval and air bases and where the United States recently said it was placing missile defense systems. After any launch, U.S. satellites and radars in the region would be able to calculate the trajectory of missiles within minutes and quickly conclude whether they are on a test path headed for open ocean or potentially headed for land areas such as Japan. The United States and Japan would then have to decide whether to try to shoot the missiles down, U.S. officials say. A launch without warning? Yun said he was basing his assessment on South Korean and U.S. intelligence. On Tuesday, a U.S. official said that the American government believes a test launch could happen at any time and without North Korea issuing a standard notice to commercial aviation and maritime shipping that would warn planes and vessels to stay away from the missile's path. The official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the information, cautioned that most of the information comes from satellite imagery, so it's impossible to reach a definitive conclusion because the United States cannot gather information on the ground. He said the launch could be "imminent" but also cautioned that the United States "simply doesn't know." Based on what the United States has seen, the belief is that the missiles have received their liquid fuel and are ready for launch.North Korea's 'bluff for rewards' history Speaking at a Senate Armed Services hearing Tuesday, Locklear said the U.S. military would not want to shoot down a North Korean missile whose trajectory would send it into the open sea. But he said if the missile's path appeared to threaten a U.S. ally, such as Japan, interceptor missiles could be used to try to bring it down. Japan's deployment of missile defenses in Tokyo follows similar measures taken ahead of the North's rocket launches last year. Since the U.N. Security Council voted last month to impose new sanctions on Kim's regime over the latest North Korean nuclear test, Pyongyang has kept up a steady flow of words and acts that could give the impression of a nation heading inexorably toward conflict. On Tuesday, it advised foreigners in South Korea to secure shelter or evacuate the country in case of hostilities on the Korean Peninsula, the latest in a string of ominous warnings. It also kept more than 50,000 of its workers from an industrial complex jointly operated with South Korea, which had been a key symbol of cooperation between the two countries. 'Holiday atmosphere' inside North Korea But on the same day, state media published articles that described festive events and international visits, suggesting a much less fraught situation inside North Korea. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that various sporting events were happening or scheduled to take place to mark the 101st anniversary next week of the birth of Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea and the grandfather of Kim Jong Un. "The ongoing sports tournaments make the country seethe with holiday atmosphere," KCNA said. Kim Il Sung's birthday, known as the Day of the Sun, is a major public holiday in North Korea. The planned events include an international marathon Sunday in Pyongyang in which runners from North Korea and other countries will participate. KCNA also noted Tuesday the arrival by plane in North Korea of a delegation from the Japan-Korea Society for Scientific and Educational Interchange. Such visits sit strangely alongside the North's warning last week to foreign diplomats in Pyongyang that it wouldn't be able to guarantee their safety in the event of a conflict. Some North Korea watchers have observed that the regime's domestic propaganda has focused recently on efforts to promote economic development, while the bellicose threats appear targeted primarily at a foreign audience. Varying levels of concern The angry rhetoric has also failed to alarm South Koreans, who have lived through decades of North Korean bombast. Residents of Seoul have continued to go unflappably about their daily business. "South Korea has been living under such threats from the past, and we are always prepared for it," South Korean Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae told CNN on Wednesday. He called the current climate "a very ordinary situation." "North Korea may launch missiles at any time, and our military is fully prepared for it," he said. But the North's fiery words appear to have had an effect on the American public, with 41% of those surveyed saying they see the reclusive nation as an immediate threat to the United States, according to a recent CNN/ORC International poll. That's up 13 percentage points in less than a month, CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "If North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wanted to get the attention of the American public, his strategy is starting to work," Holland said. Andrei Lankov, a professor of history at Kookmin University in Seoul, noted the varying levels of concern in an opinion article for The New York Times published Tuesday. "The farther one is from the Korean Peninsula, the more one will find people worried about the recent developments here," he said. The tense situation does appear to have prompted some Chinese tour groups to call off upcoming trips to North Korea. Hong Lei, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said Wednesday that some agencies and tourists had canceled plans, but he said the Chinese-North Korean border continued to operate normally. Western tourism agencies that organize visits to North Korea haven't so far reported any changes to their activities. A troubled industrial zone The most tangible signs of disruption are in the Kaesong Industrial Complex, the manufacturing zone on the North Korean side of the border where more than 120 South Korean companies operate. Last week, the North started blocking South Korean personnel from crossing the border back into the complex. And this week, it said it was pulling out the more than 50,000 North Koreans who work inside the zone and temporarily suspending activities there. It had blocked the border crossing previously, in 2009, but pulling out the workers was a new step. As of Wednesday lunchtime, only a few hundred South Koreans remained inside the complex, according to South Korean authorities, down from more than 800 before the North started restricting entry. Also on Wednesday, South Korea accused the North of carrying out a wave of cyberattacks that paralyzed the networks of major South Korean banks and broadcasters last month. It is the first time that Seoul has formally pointed the finger at Pyongyang for the hacking, which affected more than 48,000 computers.

Weirdly, Emtage seems to be okay with this. Today, the Search industry earns $780 billion dollars annually and Emtage doesn't receive any of this money. "I don't feel like a father of anything," he states. "It's not how I think of myself really ... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/28/google-same-day-delivery-san-francisco_n_2970754.html?utm_hp_ref=technology

Google has been testing "Google Shopping Express"where people involved in the test were able to shop online for items, like using Amazon, only Google promises a same day delivery system that Amazon and other companies do not by working with large retailers like Target and Toys R Us to allow pick up and delivery to the customer's homes that same day.

The concept is still new and Google is debating how much to charge for their service in the future.

This is definitely an example of a potential Oligopoly -- Google is such a massive company that is trying to compete with smaller companies in order to take over their job and purpose.

While I think that Google has a good idea that will appeal to many people, I don't understand what the point is. Why not let other online sales companies like eBay and Amazon serve their purpose like they've been doing for years?

A good thing that can come out of this, however, is that "Google is working with local courier companies that pick up products from local stores and deliver them to shoppers' homes," which supports smaller, local delivery companies.

Innovative Music Video

Country singer, Luke Bryan, has developed a music video campaign in hopes that it encourages fans to vote for him as ACM Entertainer of the Year for 2013. The idea is that his website gives you a frame from the music video, you mimic it on your own webcam, and shortly after it is incorporated into his new music video for "Just a Sip". Do you think this is a good way to target fans and supporters?

Social Mist

A friend of mine from Sweden is launching a brand new social network in approximately three months. He has been offered over two million dollars for it, but is not planning on selling anytime soon. Remember to join the web site in a few months. I have already got a sneak peak on it and it is completely amazing.
