Work Hard, But No Playing Hard?

This article talks about how a gym teacher at a school puts math and English lessons into a gym class that is know for a period where children/students are able to take a break from the school work, relax their minds, and just play for an hour.
Do you think gym should be children's fun? or do you think their needs to be more academics put into it?

  1. One of the big issues in USA is obesity. The President and many organizations are promoting better ways of healthy eating habits. I believe that one of the most important things to stay healthy is to exercise at least 30 minutes every day. Children and young adults should be able to take advantage of gym class to exercise. Students have about 6 hours of learning in the classroom. It would not hurt to take 30-45 minutes out of the 6 hours to run around and have fun exercising.
In high school, my gym teacher took one week to teach us about how wrong bully was by having us sit down and watch TV the whole class. I skipped gym that week and used that to do my homework in my reading teacher’s classroom. I understood why they were trying to tell us that bullying is wrong but someone else could have told us and not use our gym time... So, I do think that gym should be children's fun.

  2. While I do agree with Sarah on the need nowadays for children to exercise, I also agree with this teachers unique approach. I like how she incorporated learning games into exercising to keep the kids focused on something other than the workout they should be getting. However, I think that this technique could better be used by teachers in and outside the classroom. Instead of gym teachers incorporating english and arithmetic in their class I think other teachers should include exercise in their classes. This would not only help combat the growing health problem in the United States but it is a fun way for kids to learn as opposed to sitting on their butts all day.
