Journalistic freedom in other countries

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/30/reporters-without-borders-press-freedom_n_2582243.html?utm_hp_ref=media

Reporters Without Borders has released the 2013 index of the "best" and "worst" countries regarding freedom of journalism and media...

Finland has been the top country for three years in a row, which in my opinion reflects on their governmental standards and how they feel their people should be treated by knowing what's really going on around them.

A horrible example, on the other end, would be North Korea. Many of the shows they watch, songs they listen to, news they hear, etc. is strictly propaganda for their country's leader(s) and glorification of their nation. For example, when researching this topic a little further, I found a few of the most popular songs that are listened to in North Korea:

- "Song of General Kim II-sung"
- "Song of General Kim Jong-il"
- "Onwards Toward the Final Victory" (For Kim Jong-un)

Clearly, the people living there live within an incredibly restricted "media-fence." They are so unfamiliar with any type of media that does not pertain to their leader or to their glorified country, that anything besides the propaganda that they are familiar with (like international news for instance) would be completely foreign and unnatural to them.

I truly think that the way some countries are SO depleted from any outside contact or news is detrimental to the well being of the people living there, and I'm sure there are many sources and studies to back up that idea.

Pastor Vs Waiter

How do you guys feel about this? I feel bad for the waiter! It wasn't his/her fault that the gratuity is automatically added into the bill, the pastor came off as pretty rude.

Have shootings increased within the last year? Why is this becoming such a horrible trend? Do you think this girl being broadcasted on national television a few days earlier has anything to do with this incident? Or was it just a coincidence?

YouTube to Potentially Launch Paid Channels

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/01/29/youtube-rumored-to-launch-paid.html

This article discusses how YouTube is in the works to make some channels accessible through paid subscription. They feel this will get more notable producers such as the Onion and Reuters to produce content for YouTube. Do you think this is a potentially successful way for YouTube to gain traffic and profits? Or will this be just as successful as the ads we already skip and/or ignore?

Ray Lewis

With the upcoming Super Bowl and retirement of Ray Lewis, the media has made Lewis seem like a hero. But it was only thirteen years ago that he was indicted for murder. This shows just how fast the media and public forget.

Thirteen years ago, Ray Lewis was in the back of a limousine speeding down an Atlanta street, leaving the chaos of what would become a notorious murder scene.
Today, Ray Lewis prepares to play his final minutes in the NFL as one of the most celebrated and iconic players in league history.
These are two sets of indisputable facts, facts that don't seem to connect in any meaningful way. To accept one set, you have to virtually ignore the other. It just doesn't make sense, no matter which angle you take. How does a man implicated in a double homicide end up receiving a congratulatory bear hug from the NFL commissioner in front of thousands of fans wearing his No. 52 jersey? From the other direction: How could a man who's done so much for his team and his community still be held accountable for a tragedy for which he was absolved?
From any angle, though, this question looms over the entire life and career of Ray LewisHow on earth did he get here from there?
The story of Ray Lewis is the story of American culture at its most redemptive … and its most soulless. There are those who are willing to overlook what Lewis may or may not have done, and there are those who will never let the man escape suspicion.
What's inescapable is that as well as Ray Lewis played the game of football, he played the game of redemption even better.
"He's a remarkable case study of worst-to-first," says Vada Manager, a corporate strategist and a former Nike executive who helped guide the company's strategy during Kobe Bryant's rape accusations. "There aren't many athletes who have done what he's done in rebuilding his image from where it was to where it is today."
Some facts, to set the stage: Early on the morning of Jan. 31, 2000, Ray Lewis was in the Buckhead district of Atlanta, celebrating with friends in the wee hours after Super Bowl XXXIV. The Rams had just beaten the Titans in one of the most thrilling last-second finishes in the game's history.
Lewis was already a three-time Pro Bowler, certainly a star but not yet an icon. That night, he and a group of friends found themselves in a heated argument with another group outside an upscale bar. The argument turned physical, punches were thrown and Lewis and his companions piled into a limousine to leave the scene. Behind them, Jacinth Baker, age 21, and Richard Lollar, age 24, lay dying of stab wounds.
Ray Lewis, left, greets NFL commissioner Roger Goodell before last weekend's wild card game. (AP)Again, these are facts. But the angle of those facts – the cause of the fight, the person (or persons) holding the knives, Lewis' knowledge of and involvement in the events – remains unknown. He and two of his companions were charged with murder. Lewis' attorneys negotiated a deal: dismissal of the murder charges in exchange for testimony against his colleagues, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, and a plea of guilty to obstruction of justice, a misdemeanor.
Oakley and Sweeting were later acquitted of the murder charges. Lewis was fined $250,000 by the NFL, put on a one-year probation and would go on to reach undisclosed (and still confidential) settlements with the families of both victims.
More facts: The very next season, Lewis was not only in uniform, but also he would lead his Baltimore Ravens to the Super Bowl and win MVP. He would go on to amass 13 Pro Bowl invitations in his career, and when he leaves the game at the end of this postseason he will be considered one of the very best ever to play his position.
He's also a motivational tornado, an inspirational force of nature. Whether he's cheering on teammates, conversing with charitable groups or speaking to reporters, he wears his heart and his faith on the outside. (Where you can easily see them, a cynic would argue.)
An installment of the NFL Network's "A Football Life" focusing on Lewis that ran last fall shows his style in action. "We've got to savor these moments!" he tells his teammates at one point. "I couldn't see that when I was 24, 25! That's why God had to incarcerate me, so I could see how great his blessing was for me! So I had to come from a jail cell to the Super Bowl!"
He did exactly that, and much more. And he did so by being perhaps the best example of a rebuilt and re-created image. Manager notes that there are three consistent factors necessary for any public figure to change public perception, and Lewis hit all three perfectly:
1. Winning is redemptive. "The public is forgiving, the public will give you second chances," Manager explains. Lewis won immediately after the Atlanta incident, and while he hasn't been back to the Super Bowl since, he's continued to play at the height of his profession for more than a decade.
2. Rehabilitation begins at home. "He's been the consummate teammate; he's been a family man," Manager notes. "It's authentic. It's believable. Contrition is important … and there's no recidivism. He hasn't been involved with any problems since then."
3. Charity and image are essential. Lewis has been a vocal force for charity, and he's also shown a more deft touch to his public image, as with his humorous NFL ad with Tom Brady this season.
Of course, even if every athlete involved in scandal knows (or is taught) the three steps to redemption, not every athlete has the opportunity, the drive or the personality to be able to pull it off. Consider Pete Rose, whose star is forever tarnished by revelations of gambling while playing, or Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, both stained by allegations of steriod use. None of these players has the opportunity to "win" again at their chosen profession, and all three have chosen an adversarial or indifferent stance.
Tiger Woods, by contrast, has the opportunity to win again to get past his own scandal but faces a different challenge than Lewis: deception. America can forgive many sins, but fooling us isn't one of them. Woods painted himself as a family man only to be revealed as anything but. Lewis, by contrast, was always a violent player; while that doesn't necessarily equate to crime, it's a smaller perceptual leap to make.
Cindy Owens holds a photograph of her nephew, Richard Lollar. (USA Today Sports)Indeed, the idea of deception, for some, is why Lewis' top-of-the-lungs expressions of faith fall flat: It appears his jailhouse conversion is a little too convenient. One wonders who he's trying to convince he's a good guy: others or himself.
For his part, Lewis has publicly put Atlanta behind him. When a USA Today reporter asked him about the murders this week, Lewis replied, "You want to talk to me about something that happened 13 years ago right now?"
Lewis is not quite as evasive under more controlled circumstances. In March, he spoke to students at Harvard University, a speech that forms the backbone of his NFL Network documentary.
"The first night I was in jail, a whisper came to me, and it said, 'Can you hear me now?' " Lewis said. "That's when I knew that no matter where I was, by any means necessary, I had to prove to myself, to my family, to my fans. … I gotta get something done. If y'all [that accused him of murder] are that bold to put my reputation on the line, I'm that bold to fight for it."
"I'm always disturbed in my spirit about how people look at me from that incident," Lewis continued in another interview. "Those families that were affected will never know the truth. And that's sad."
But why will they never know the truth? Isn't it within his power to tell them?
"I would like for him to tell one day exactly what happened," Lollar's aunt, Cindy Lollar-Owens, told USA Today.
So much about the most important moments of Ray Lewis' life remains a mystery, and for this reason, so much of his legacy remains inextricably tied to that one night in Atlanta.
There's also the flip side of this, that Lewis was never convicted of any crime. No evidence suggests that he was materially involved in the deaths of Baker and Lollar. How long should Lewis carry the responsibility, in the public's eyes, for their deaths?
But as long as no one is behind bars for the murders – and to this day, no one has been convicted – the questions surrounding that night in Buckhead will persist, especially with Lewis remaining in the public eye. He's already accepted a job as an ESPN analyst, and he'll continue to be a commercial force for companies like EA Sports and Under Armour, among others.
Ray Lewis is doing everything he can to make the Atlanta incident a footnote to his story, not the first line, and he's well on the way. He understands how redemption works in America, and he's worked tirelessly to try to achieve it. Whether he did isn't for him to decide, it's for the rest of us.

Licenses for illegal immigrants in Illinois

Illinois passed a law on Sunday allowing illegal immigrants the right to drive. An estimated 250,000 people are currently living in Illinois illegally and this law will allow them to apply for a temporary license that is good for up to three years. They will be required to get training and insurance but the controversy surrounding this law is the possible fraud cases that could arise. Illinois is not requiring these future drivers to be fingerprinted so as not to discourage men and women from applying for a license. However, those opposed to this new measure have brought up the large number of fraudulent cases in New Mexico, Washington and Utah where the law is also in effect. Do you think that this new law is beneficial to the country and the immigrants that require transportation or do you believe it is too much of a risk?

Facebook making people miserable..

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/22/facebook-study-envy_n_2526549.html?ir=Technology

...A study in Germany has shown that after viewing Facebook, one in three people felt unhappy with their own lives.

I find this article very interesting and even humorous because I personally have had friends tell me that they were having a terrible day, and after logging into Facebook, felt much worse after seeing how awesome everyone else's day was going. From photos to statuses, it doesn't take much to make someone sitting at home doing homework feel envious of your crazy night out with friends and drinks.

This is a perfect example of how strong of an impact social sites like Facebook have on our psyche and wellbeing, whether we acknowledge it or not.

Now a household name, just a couple weeks ago, Katherine Webb(dating Alabama's quarterback AJ McCarron) was an ex Miss Alabama USA titleholder working on the managerial end of the popular fast food chain: Chick-Fil-A.

After 15 of airtime during the ESPN broadcast of the BCS Chamionship game, she now has modeling offers, a judging position at the Miss USA pageant in the Summer, and now a spot on reality television. This goes to show how the slightest bit of airtime can affect a mass audience. Throughout the game, Webb received thousands of new twitter followers, including several celebrities. Pretty crazy.

Netflix outperform's its own projections: New York Times Article

A Resurgent Netflix Beats Projections, Even Its Own

Streaming movies on an iPad. Netflix gained two million American subscribers to its streaming service in the fourth quarter.J. Emilio Flores for The New York TimesStreaming movies on an iPad. Netflix gained two million American subscribers to its streaming service in the fourth quarter.
9:12 p.m. | Updated For all those who have doubted its business acumen, Netflix had a resounding answer on Wednesday: 27.15 million.
That’s the number of American homes that were subscribers to the streaming service by the end of 2012, beating the company’s own projections for the fourth quarter after a couple of quarters of underwhelming results.
Netflix’s growth spurt in streaming — up by 2.05 million customers in the United States, from 25.1 million in the third quarter — was its biggest in nearly three years, and helped the company report net income of $7.9 million, surprising many analysts who had predicted a loss.
The results reflected just how far Netflix has come since the turbulence of mid-2011, when its botched execution of a new pricing plan for its services — streaming and DVDs by mail — resulted in an online flogging by angry customers. Investors battered its stock price, sending it from a high of around $300 in 2011 to as low as $53 last year.
“It’s risen from the ashes,” said Barton Crockett, a senior analyst at Lazard Capital Markets. “A lot of investors have been very skeptical that Netflix will work. With this earnings report, they’re making a strong argument that the business is real, that it will work.”
Investors, cheered by the results, sent Netflix shares soaring more than 35 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday. The stock had ended regular trading at $103.26.
Netflix’s fourth-quarter success was a convenient reminder to the entertainment and technology industries that consumers increasingly want on-demand access to television shows and movies. Streaming services by Amazon, Hulu and Redbox are all competing on the same playing field, but for now Netflix remains the biggest such service, and thus a pioneer for all the others.
“Our growth and our competitors’ growth shows just how large the opportunity is for Internet TV, where people get to control their viewing experience,” Netflix’s chief executive, Reed Hastings, said in a telephone interview Wednesday evening.
Questions persist, though, about whether Netflix will be able to attract enough subscribers to keep paying its ever-rising bills to content providers, which total billions of dollars in the years to come. The company said on Wednesday that it might take on more debt to finance more original programs, the first of which, the political thriller “House of Cards,” will have its premiere on the service on Feb. 1. Netflix committed about $100 million to make two seasons of “House of Cards,” one of five original programs scheduled to come out on the service this year.
“The virtuous cycle for us is to gain more subscribers, get more content, gain more subscribers, get more content,” Mr. Hastings said in an earnings conference call.
The company’s $7.9 million profit for the quarter represented 13 cents a share, surprising analysts who had expected a loss of 12 cents a share. The company said revenue of $945 million, up from $875 million in the quarter in 2011, was driven in part by holiday sales of new tablets and television sets.
Netflix added nearly two million new subscribers in other countries, though it continued to lose money overseas, as expected, and said it would slow its international expansion plans in the first part of this year.
The “flix” in Netflix, its largely forgotten DVD-by-mail business, fared a bit better than the company had projected, posting a loss of just 380,000 subscribers in the quarter, to 8.22 million. The losses have slowed for four consecutive quarters, indicating that the homes that still want DVDs really want DVDs.
On the streaming side, Netflix’s retention rate improved in the fourth quarter, suggesting growing customer satisfaction.
Asked whether the company’s reputation had fully recovered after its missteps in 2011, Mr. Hastings said, “We’re on probation at this point, but we’re not out of jail.”
He has emphasized subscriber happiness, even going so far as to say on Wednesday that “we really want to make it easy to quit” Netflix. If the exit door is well marked, he asserted, subscribers will be more likely to come back.
The hope is that original programs like “House of Cards” and “Arrested Development” will lure both old and new subscribers to the service. Those programs, plus the film output deal with the Walt Disney Company announced in December, affirm that Netflix cares more and more about being a gallery — with showy pieces that cannot be seen anywhere else — and less about being a library of every film and TV show ever made.
“They’re morphing into something that people understand,” said Mr. Crockett of Lazard Capital.
Mr. Hastings said this had been happening for years, but that it was becoming more apparent now to consumers and investors.
Mr. Hastings’s letter to investors brought up the elephant in the room, the activist investor Carl C. Icahn, who acquired nearly 10 percent of the company’s stock last October. Mr. Icahn, known for his campaigns for corporate sales and revampings, stated then that Netflix “may hold significant strategic value for a variety of significantly larger companies.”
Netflix subsequently put into place a shareholder rights plan, known as a poison pill, to protect itself against a forced sale by Mr. Icahn.
The company said on Wednesday, “We have no further news about his intentions, but have had constructive conversations with him about building a more valuable company.”
Factoring in the stock’s 30 percent rise since November and the after-hours action on Wednesday, Mr. Icahn’s stake has now more than doubled in value, to more than $700 million from roughly $320 million.

Yet somehow, Lucas Lee Graham was able to film an entire high quality movie inside the park. This film is also featured at the Sundance Film Festival.   For example, when the street artist Banksy created a protest of Guantanamo Bay in Disneyland there was a lot of controversy over the issue.

Was It Appropriate for Beyonce to Lip-Sync the National Anthem?

It has been speculated that Beyonce lip-synced the National Anthem at President Obama's Inauguration. Why? Why would you lip-sync the National Anthem? It's not like you don't know the words (if she didn't know the lyrics the lip syncing would be overshadowed). Granted, musicians are caught lip syncing all the time. Remember Ashlee Simpson's mishap on Saturday Night Live? Anyway, Beyonce's reasoning for lip-syncing the national anthem was that she "didn't have time to rehearse with the Marine Corp Band".  This article reveals the details or her performance, the insider who explains the circumstances, and her decision to follow through with the recording.

Regardless of why Beyonce lip-synced, was it appropriate for the occasion? Did she make a good decision? Do you think this will impact her image or fan base?

Life of Pi

I highly recommend the movie Life of Pi, which is directed by Ang Lee. Seeing the trailer I did not know what to think of it. I went to see it when I had nothing else to do and was intrigued after the first minute. Watch it in 3D for ultimate experience. It is a movie that is extraordinary. It stays with you long after it is over and it is food for thought. I would rank it right up there with some of the best movies ever made such as Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption etc…

Joe Biden potential president runner

ABC News Blogs

Biden Hints at Presidential Run

Amid all the pomp and circumstance of inauguration weekend, Vice President Joe Biden showed a few of his 2016 cards as he mingled with some constituencies that would be key if he decides to run for president.
On Saturday, Biden attended the State Society of Iowa "First in the National Celebration" where he slipped up and referred to himself as the president instead of as the V.P.
"I'm proud to be president of the United States, but I am prouder to be…" Biden said as the crowd started to laugh and cheer. "I'm proud to be vice president of the United States but I am prouder to be Barack Obama, President Barack Obama's vice president."
It wasn't just the state of Iowa that he seemed to be courting. For his official swearing in at the Naval Observatory on Sunday, Biden invited members of two other early primary states - New Hampshire and South Carolina. Newly elected Gov. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and other New Hampshire officials attended, and according to a pool report, and a seat at the ceremony was reserved for South Carolina Democratic Party chair Dick Harpootlian.
And who did the vice president select to swear him in for a second term? Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was the third woman and first Hispanic to ever issue the oath. On Sunday evening, the wooing of Hispanics continued when he made a surprise stop at the Latino Inaugural Gala.
"One thing that happened this election, you spoke, you spoke in a way that the world - and I mean the world as well as the United States - could not fail to hear," Biden said there. "The fact that the Hispanic and Latino community in this country was such a decisive voice in turning out in this election was noticed by the whole hemisphere….I think you underestimate your power. I think you underestimate what you've done for America and what you're about to do."
Then came Biden's jaunt through the Inaugural parade Monday when the vice president hammed it up with the crowd as he jogged up and down and zigzagged across the parade route, giving hugs and handshakes to supporters, wearing his penchant for retail politics on his sleeve.
So Biden left plenty of 2016 tea leaves to read as he heads into his second term as President Obama's number two.

McDonald Drama

McDonald's settles Mich. suit over Islamic diet

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — McDonald's and one of its franchise owners agreed to pay $700,000 to members of the Muslim community to settle allegations a Detroit-area restaurant falsely advertised its food as being prepared according to Islamic dietary law.
McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. agreed Friday to the tentative settlement, with that money to be shared by Dearborn Heights resident Ahmed Ahmed, a Detroit health clinic, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn and lawyers.
Ahmed's attorney, Kassem Dakhlallah, told The Associated Press on Monday that he's "thrilled" with the preliminary deal that's expected to be finalized March 1. McDonald's and Finley's Management deny any liability but say the settlement is in their best interests.
The lawsuit alleged that Ahmed bought a chicken sandwich in September 2011 at a Dearborn McDonald's but found it wasn't halal — meaning it didn't meet Islamic requirements for preparing food. Islam forbids consumption of pork, and God's name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.
Dakhlallah said there are only two McDonald's in the United States that sell halal products and both are in Dearborn, which has one of the nation's largest Arab and Muslim communities. Overall, the Detroit area is home to about 150,000 Muslims of many different ethnicities.
The locations advertise that they exclusively sell halal Chicken McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches and they have to get those products from an approved halal provider, Dakhlallah said. He said there was no evidence of problems on the production side, but he alleges that the Dearborn location on Ford Road sold non-halal products when it ran out of halal.
Dakhlallah said he was approached by Ahmed, and they conducted an investigation. A letter sent to McDonald's Corp. and Finley's Management by Dakhlallah's firm said Ahmed had "confirmed from a source familiar with the inventory" that the restaurant had sold non-halal food "on many occasions."
After they received no response to the letter, Dakhlallah said, they filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court in November 2011 as part of a class action.
The AP left messages Monday afternoon for attorneys representing the corporation and the franchise.
In the settlement notice, Finley's Management said it "has a carefully designed system for preparing and serving halal such that halal chicken products are labeled, stored, refrigerated, and cooked in halal-only areas." The company added it trains its employees on preparing halal food and "requires strict adherence to the process."
He said although Ahmed believes McDonald's was negligent, there was no evidence that the chain set out to deceive customers.
"McDonald's from the very beginning stepped up and took this case very seriously," Dakhlallah said. "They made it clear they wanted to resolve this. They got ahead of the problem."
The lawsuit covers anyone who bought the halal-advertised products from the Ford Road restaurant and another Dearborn McDonald's with a different owner between September 2005 and last Friday. Since that would be impossible to determine, Dakhlallah said both sides agreed to provide money to community-based charities that benefit members of this group.
The other location on Michigan Avenue wasn't a defendant or a focus of the investigation, Dakhlallah said.
He said the final hearing will ultimately determine who gets what and how much, but roughly $275,000 is expected to go to the Huda Clinic, about $150,000 to the museum, $230,000 to attorneys and $20,000 to Ahmed.
Dakhlallah said he believes it's the first lawsuit of its kind related to McDonald's and halal food.
In 2002, McDonald's agreed to donate $10 million to Hindu and other groups in the U.S. to settle lawsuits that accused the chain of mislabeling french fries and hash browns as vegetarian. The vegetable oil used to prepare the items had contained traces of beef for flavoring purposes.
